A soft place to start a hard conversation

Better Help is a concept app for couples who want guidance in their relationship. I designed a gentle home, a chat with an AI guide and a mood tracker, so a hard conversation can start somewhere soft.

The design problem is that a couple opening this app is usually upset, so every screen has to ask for very little. The welcome screen has one line, one illustration and one Next button. The home screen leads with a single blue New Chat bar and puts everything else, such as the current conversation, the mood tools and a daily tip, beneath it in order of how likely someone is to want it next.

How it should feel

Kind, private and unhurried. Black and white with one calm blue, playful illustrations to lower the stakes, and words that sound like a friend.

Nothing should feel clinical, and nothing should rush you.

The illustrations are hand-drawn black line figures on warm off-white, such as someone lying on the floor with a dog asleep on their back, so the app shows people in ordinary moments and not in crisis. Blue is saved for the actions that matter, New Chat and Save. On the mood screen the background turns dark for the question, so the moment feels private and the rounded pill answers stay quiet. A conversation card shows progress as a small filling icon and a percentage, which suggests that a hard talk is something you move through, not something you fail.

Checking in feels lighter with an illustration beside it.

The screens

Looking back

Tone is a design material. In a product about feelings, the illustration style and the wording did as much work as the layout. The History screen is where I paid most attention to calm: a title and a one-line promise, three filter pills, All, Active and Resolved, and cards that repeat the same structure, so progress is easy to compare. It is a concept, so none of it has been used by real couples, and I would want a specialist’s review of the wording before treating it as more than a design exploration.
